If the streets of Santa Teresa and the style of 2666 are anarchic and the epigraph refers to our corrosive modernity and its abuses of freedom and desires, then we can anticipate an even more sprawling post-modern novel. Now, I like big books, but only big books that I like. Chilean author Roberto Bolaño left behind a surfeit of unfinished manuscripts after his death, but nothing was more intriguing than a reported sixth part of 2666, his bestselling magnum opus. 2666 by Roberto Bolaño (2004) (translated from the spanish by Natasha Wimmer, 2008). In the second section of 2666, Bolano moves away from the “academic novel” of the critics (and reality as we know it) and delves into the polarities of the known and the unknown, truth vs. Published a year after his death and translated into English a few more years later, it is an enormous book that defies summary. The novel's cryptic title is one of its many grim jokes; there is no reference to this figure in its 900 pages. The first thing I'll say is it took me a very long time to get through this book. Not every writer would write a novel in the form of a completely invented encyclopaedia of imaginary writers and call the result Nazi Literature in the Americas. 2666 is Roberto Bolano's master statement. Either there are going to be a lot more posts on this one, or hardly any. 898 pages, Farrar, Straus and Giroux.
